Clawhammer Banjo-
Alan Julich has been playing, learning, and teaching clawhammer banjo for well over 166,440 hours.  He's been in numerous bands, some locally famous including The Porchclimbers led by Vic Lukas and The Stillhouse Botttom Band. Alan has had the opportunity to play with the much feted old time fiddler, Joe Thomspon, at numerous venues. Alan has studied with some of the luminary banjo players of our time including TonySpadaro of Chapel Hill, Dwight Diller of Pocahontas County West Virginia, and Shelia Kay Adams of Sodom, NC.

Clawhammer Banjo-
Bud Godreau has been playing clawhammer banjo, violin, guitar and mandolin for too many years to count.  He is a senior Luthier at High Strung repairing and doing set-up for violins and banjos.  He has led numerous folk bands, has been a bluegrass DJ and MC'd at folk festivals throughout the country.  In 2000, he was the director of the Carrboro music festival. 

Guitar, Mandolin-
  Brad Newell is a well established teacher, musician, and composer, with a diverse  musical background. He studied music performance and composition at Berklee School of Music, School of the Arts, and UNC-G. He has performed in many musical contexts, from jazz to folk to rock to classical guitar. He has been teaching guitar, mandolin, banjo, and bass for the last 15-20 years, and currently plays in a number of local groups including Workbook(jazz), 8-EYES(rock), Butter(funkrock), and Jaafar(fusion). Mandolin-
Aaron Greenhood plays mandolin, guitar, fiddle, tenor banjo and anything else he can get his hands on.  He does sales and organizes workshops at High Strung.  He leads the weekly Old-time learning jam Tuesday nights at High Strung and teaches private lessons in guitar and mandolin.  He currently plays with The Mighty Juveniles String Band. 

Beginners Sessions 
...are for folks who don't really even know how to hold their instrument, OR are thinking about taking lessons but aren't sure what's entailed. It's a no-stress, no-committment way to learn:

  • how to tune it
  • how to hold it
  • how to use a strap
  • how to read a chord chart
  • proper care & feeding 
  • all about private lessons (cost, time, what to expect)

These sessions are taught by local teachers who specialize in the particular instrument - if you enjoy their style, you can even sign up with that teacher for private lessons.

Cost: $5 per session. (No limit on the number of sessions you may sign up for.)

Harmonica- Alex Weiss is a multi instrumentalist and composer originaly from Queens NY.  Alex performs on trumpet, recorders, harmonica, and congas. Mr. Weiss has been teaching music since 1978 and offer’s lessons privately and also residencies and performances in the schools. For more information visit: www.differentdrum.us

Clawhammer Banjo-
  Mike Fishback has performed and taught both fretless and fretted clawhammer banjo for over 30 years.  He conducted a National Endowment for the Arts study with the late Tommy Jarrell, and also performed and recorded with the late Fred Cockeram, both of whom were brilliant traditional mountain musicians.  Mike performs with the Durham Rangers old-time string band. 

Guitar

Guitar, Bluegrass Banjo-
Rick has been playing, teaching and performing on the guitar for the past 40 years. In 1990, after befriending banjo virtuoso and Swiss native Jens Kruger, he picked up the banjo.  He has studied with bluegrass legends Bill Keith and Jens Kruger. Rick teaches everything from Rock to Bluegrass. He specializes in Wayne Henderson Fingerstyle Guitar and 5-string Scrugg's Style Bluegrass Banjo.  He has performed with The Kruger Brothers, Pattie and Jack LeSueur and Cedar Creek, opened for Pierce Pettis, Robin and Linda Williams and shared the stage with Bo Diddley.

Harp-
Winifred Garrett is the Artistic Director and Founder of "The Harp Studio".  Principal Harpist for the 2009-2010 season of the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra and the Durham Symphony, she is the founding  instructor of the harp program at W.G. Pearson GT Magnet Elementary School in Durham, NC and is a music  faculty member of the Durham Arts Council.  A successful freelancer for over 30 years, Ms. Garrett is lead harpist for High Tea at the Umstead Hotel in Cary, NC and can be heard performing for North Carolina Theater productions in Raleigh, NC.
